A FOUNDATION FOR EDUCATION: Three Months to Three Years

The parent-child program consists of weekly sessions that provide knowledgeable advice for parents and age-appropriate activities for children, including free play, crafts, painting, baking, storytelling, farm excursions, songs, and movement.

Besides helping children develop essential social skills, this program provides parents with the companionship and support of their peers and the wisdom of guest speakers, offering insight into topics such as:

  • Creative play
  • Child development
  • Healthy child-rearing practices
  • A GENTLE BEGINNING: Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten

Soft colors, fresh flowers, and natural toys welcome younger students to the kindergarten classroom. An atmosphere of warmth and calm sets the stage for a rhythmical cycle of activities, including:

  • Storytelling—to stimulate visualization, vocabulary, and memory
  • Free play and drama—to ignite imagination and social relationships
  • Counting games—to develop an awareness of numbers
  • Artistic activities—to explore color and motivate expression
  • Outdoor play and walks—to foster an appreciation of nature
  • Here, children develop the curiosity, verbal capacities, social skills, and motor skills that are essential for later learning.

    A GUIDED JOURNEY: Lower School

One of the greatest strengths of Waldorf education is the fact that a single teacher remains with a class as it progresses through the eight years of elementary education. Because the children learn and grow under the guidance of the same adult, the classroom atmosphere is one of comfort and trust.

Careful attention is paid to each child’s social, intellectual, emotional, and spiritual development. The arts are central in all subjects, and enhance the lively presentation of number concepts, reading, and writing. Specialists in a diversity of subjects enrich the student experience with offerings that include:

  • Foreign languages
  • Painting
  • Gardening
  • Knitting
  • Movement
  • Music
  • Drama
  • Eurythmy
  • A NEW CHALLENGE: Middle School

As the child grows, the Sacramento Waldorf School keeps pace by presenting greater challenges and promoting broader independence. Academics are strengthened and deepened with each passing grade, enabling each child to exercise new skills and talents. Responsibility is encouraged by means of individual assignments, and social skills are expanded through team sports and musical ensembles.

By eighth grade, students have experienced a fully integrated education—connected to the world of nature and to the wider world, and ready to meet the tasks of high school with competence and confidence.

A QUEST FOR SELF-DISCOVERY: High School

The development of mind, body, and spirit continues to be the thrust in high school. The curriculum of the Sacramento Waldorf School offers rigorous challenges in sciences, humanities, and mathematics, with arts, crafts, and music woven through the academic subjects. The intimate size of the school sets the stage for students to develop meaningful relationships with both peers and teachers.

A wide range of extra-curricular activities and social events invites young people to follow their interests and pursue their dreams. Opportunities are presented in diverse arenas, including:

  • Yearbook
  • Drama
  • Sports
  • Community service
  • Dance
  • Ecology
  • As a result of this comprehensive educational experience, Waldorf graduates step into the world as balanced, compassionate, and well-rounded individuals.
