Throughout 2022–23, Sacramento Waldorf School was called to serve our past, current, and future generations through essential, active, and conscious transformation and recalibration in meeting today’s educational and community needs. At the same time, we were called to reaffirm our foundational values. In order to use the wisdom of the whole, sessions were held with school leadership, full faculty and staff, parents who serve in leadership capacities, and other community members to identify the social, spiritual, and physical mission of Sacramento Waldorf School. Through this distillation of many perspectives, three areas of thriving emerged from this chorus of voices:
Celebrating the spirit of this place
Enkindling warmth through relationships
Inspiring a more just and human future
Three areas of striving also emerged that informed priorities set by the constituents of our school community. These three areas—freedom, accessibility, and sustainability—have gone on to inform such long-range planning as our WASC and AWSNA self-study and the SWS Strategic Plan.
Freedom
Both the individual and the community can only thrive if there is balance, interdependence, and mutual reverence between these two polarities. The school community must be consciously carried by its individual members, and an understanding of the identity and ethos that make up our educational community must reside within each member. When we fall into one-sidedness and demand our freedom at the expense of the freedom of others, we become unhealthy individuals and communities. Shared agreements and clarity in governance processes and practices build trust, vitality, and ease in our ability to work together and as individuals in service of Waldorf education in Sacramento. Working together to strengthen the reciprocal relationship between the whole and the parts and between the various bodies of the school is paramount to the healthy development of this era of Sacramento Waldorf School.

Accessibility
A regenerative, philanthropic culture is needed to provide the sufficient resources needed to increase accessibility. Resource development requires a deep examination at our current economic structures and how capital moves in relationship to and in service of cultural needs. Surveying our school constituents further validated the results of the Spring 2023 business office diagnostic as effective processes and procedures were reviewed and renewed to create the policies required to meet the changing institutional landscape. Accessibility defined through the Strategic Pillar of Financial Health urges our exploration of new revenue streams and development strategies.
Curriculum accessibility was equally expressed as an area for us to continue striving. Integrated into this equity work are the restorative justice practices and student support processes that strengthen school-and-home partnerships. Improvements in our shared agreements and policies foster healthy partnerships that support the students of SWS in our efforts increase success and accessibility.
Although the Pedagogical and Financial goals related to accessibility were most prominently noted in community feedback, accessibility priorities are being integrated throughout all Six Strategic Pillars. This ongoing process requires all governing bodies—College of Teachers, Administration, and Board of Trustees—to work within their individual spheres of responsibility to refine goals and improve collaboration in service to our school.
Sustainability
To sustain itself, the organization—and the individuals that comprise the organization—must have the capacity for continuous renewal. The original design and intent of a Waldorf school included the shared responsibility for the school environment. The dynamic tenets of collaborative leadership and consensus decision-making that Sacramento Waldorf School was founded on remain, but we are now a vastly larger and more complex organization operating within a new era when relationships to work and careers are changing. The reaffirmation of our agreements is essential to maintain the high level of collaborative inquiry needed to sense and respond to the areas of the organization that require our attention and refinement. Where are we renewing? Where is renewal needed? Where is the greatest vitality? Where do we need to dig in and renew the mission of any area of the school?
We continue to refine the questions found in 2022–23 and seek the answers through our work with the Six Strategic Pillars.
